The winemaker

One vineyard, one family, one story

In 1854, Aloyse Meyer took over his father's vineyard with the aim of developing it and enhancing the local terroirs. A few years later, in 1933, his son Joseph succeeded him, until the war cut him short and forced him to hand over management to his son, Hubert Meyer.

A graduate in oenology, Hubert honored his father by combining the first three letters of his first name to create the first JOSMEYER brand. Throughout his life, he was committed to developing the estate and making the wines known internationally, supplying the French navy, for example.

For 5 generations, the vineyard has remained in the Meyer family. Today, while Céline is at the head of the family business, her sister, Isabelle, is in charge of the winemaking and is committed to maintaining the ecological and responsible approach that is the hallmark of the Josmeyer estate.

An exceptional terroir

Located in Wintzenheim, Alsace, not far from Colmar, on the Fecht alluvial fan, Josmeyer is a 28-hectare estate producing over 160,000 bottles a year. Thanks to its location, Josmeyer is one of those incredibly rich vineyards.

Indeed, the soil is made up of sand, alluvium and pebbles, giving the wines fine, unique aromas. The Drachenloch, for example, is considered one of the hottest sites in Alsace. The soil is mainly limestone.

Situated among the rocks, facing due south, the grapes can express themselves in perfect harmony. The different grape varieties grown at Domaine Josmeyer are Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinoy Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.

An ecological and responsible commitment

From the end of the 90s, the vineyard quickly embraced an ecological approach, respectful of the environment. The vineyard was converted to organic farming and began the transition to biodynamic viticulture, so that in 2004, all the estate's wines were certified AB, agriculture biologique (organic farming).

The aim is to adopt an approach that is closer to nature, using natural methods to strengthen the plant. These changes involve: respect for the soil and fertilization, adapted plant material, specific care for the vines and grapes during harvest.

The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. It's a demanding approach that gradually brings harmony between earth, plant and man, while producing quality vintages.
