The winemaker

History

This beautiful story began in the 18th century, a time when all the vines on the estate already belonged to the family. During this period, many winegrowers were established, including C.Marey and Comte Liger-Belair. The latter were major Burgundy wine merchants, who took great care with their wines from the outset. They joined forces in 1852, and a few years later (1869), the Liger-Belair family finally took over sole management of the company. The unfortunate death of Guillaume Félix Marey left Comte Liger-Belair as sole head.

Several descendants of Comte Liger-Belair took over the reins over the years, but one in particular catches our eye: 1982. During this period, Xavier Liger-Belair sold the trading house, and his son Vincent took over the estate and organized various sharecropping operations, leaving the estate to one of his children. His work was of paramount importance for the future of the estate, as his vocation was to create a true Burgundy wine estate.

In 2001, one of Vincent's sons came knocking on the domaine's door and took over. His name is Thibault Liger-Belair, just out of a career in Internet commerce. At the same time, he set up a trading company under his own name, and set himself the challenge of reviving his family's reputation...

Simply elegant

And it's fair to say that he's given himself the means with his estate now covering 7.25 hectares. Thibault Liger-Belair, who spent 6 years studying viticulture and oenology, selected exceptional terroirs for his estate. It's on 5 communes (Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-George, Gevrey Chambertin and the regional appellations) that he expresses his magic.

Indeed, he makes wines of incomparable elegance and precision. As Thibault Liger-Belair knows, the basis of a great wine is a grape in impeccable condition, the result of year-round care in the vineyard. Our protagonist works his plots differently, depending on the soil and climate. It's these details that set him apart, but not only... The estate is labeled organic and biodynamic, a true commitment made by Thibault Liger-Belair who wishes to highlight his terroir without altering it.

Once the grapes arrive at the winery, it's a completely different story. Our winemaker's attention to detail is exemplary, leaving the wines free to reveal themselves: no tricks, fining or filtering. Finally, these wines rest in casks for 12 to 18 months, revealing more tenderness, elegance and finesse...
