The winemaker

The History of Chateau Beychevelle

The Château de Beychevelle, nicknamed "the Versailles of the Médoc" was built in the 17th century and then rebuilt in 1757 by the Marquis de Brassier. It finished its transformation by being restored at the end of the 20th century. Beychevelle was the fief of the Dukes of Épernon, especially the first of them, Jean Louis Nogaret de La Valette.

The latter was a powerful man. According to the legend, the ships which crossed his castle had to lower their sails as a sign of loyalty. Hence the name "Beychevelle" which means "Baisse Voile". The emblem of the castle is also taken from this famous legend, a ship with a griffin prow, guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus in Greek mythology.

The Vineyard

The land of Chateau Beychevelle covers 250 hectares. Only 90 are used for vineyards. The rest consists of grassland and forests. This vineyard is home to vines that are 30 years old on average. These vines have developed a vital root system that allows them to absorb nutrients in depth. But also to face the climatic conditions which can be difficult, especially with the heat of the summer. The Château Beychevelle vineyard is composed of the four noble Medoc grape varieties: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.

Manual harvesting allows us to sort and harvest the best grapes which will then be blended into the wines. These will offer you wines of a deep red while being balanced and generous.

Visits to the Château

During your visit, immerse yourself in centuries of history. With the sophistication of its classical architecture and majestic gardens, the Château de Beychevelle is a true diamond in the heart of the Médoc. This commitment takes concrete form on a daily basis through ISO 14001 certification and culturally sensitive management. And with a large part of the vineyard cultivated in organic farming.
