The winemaker

The history of the estate

Named after its successive owners, this great wine estate produced one of the most renowned wines of the Médoc long before the 1855 classification. Its quotation placed it at the top of the Grand Crus. Lucien Lurton, an agricultural engineer by training, inherited Château Brane-Cantenac in 1954.

A great winegrower and passionate about history who was able to put Brane-Cantenac at the top. In 1992, Lucien was at the head of eleven châteaux, including six classified growths, and handed over all his properties to his children. It was Henri who took over the reins of the château.

A trained oenologist, he is focused on technique and research. But also on the vine and the knowledge of the soils. His objective: to perpetuate the style of this distinguished and aromatic wine.

The vines

Three hectares planted in white are on a clay-silica micro terroir, set in the middle of the great deep gravel terroirs of Margaux, but appellation Haut-Médoc. Henri Lurton had the intuition that the parcels could be a great terroir for Blanc.

And this was confirmed with the birth of Brane-Cantenac Blanc. Three hectares of vines are planted with 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. Here, the grapes are harvested by hand, variety by variety and plot by plot, at ideal maturity.

Then comes the vat room to be pressed and fermented in barrels. Each of the batches is aged on fine lees in barrels before being blended at the end of the maturing process.

The wines of Château Brane-Cantenac

The estate makes three different wines:

The grand vin Château Brane-Cantenac This is produced at around 150,000 bottles per year and is made from a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This wine is traditionally vinified after a manual harvest, optical sorting and malolactic fermentation in barrel. It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which are new. The grand vin Château Brane-Cantenac is mainly made from the gravelly section of Brane.

Baron de Brane, the second wine This wine is made from the same grape varieties, but does not include Cabernet Franc most of the time. It is aged in barrels for 12 months, 20% of which is new wood. It has the same production as the grand vin, 150,000 bottles per year.

Château Notton, the third wine This one comes from a vineyard whose name it bears, composed of young vines and various plots in Margaux. Today, Brane-Cantenac is the perfect answer to Henri Lurton's wish to produce a great dry white wine, fruity, fresh and offering a perfect balance between roundness and acidity.
