Château Cambon la Pelouse

3.8
(18 customer reviews)
Considered as one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, Château Cambon La Pelouse belonged to the Cambon family before being taken over in 1996 by Annick and Jean Pierre Marie. Together they undertook important work to bring the estate back to life, especially after the frost of February 1956 which destroyed a large part of the vineyard. Still at the head of the estate, they are gradually committing themselves to organic and environmentally friendly production methods. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of a domain

Ranking among the oldest châteaux in the Médoc, the history of Château Cambon la Pelouse dates back to the 17th century. At that time, the property shipped its wines to England and then to Holland a century later. During the French Revolution, the castle belonged to the Cambon family, who gave the name to the castle.

Subsequently, the cold wave that crossed the country in 1956 considerably damaged a large part of the French wine heritage including the vineyard of the estate of Château Cambon La Pelouse. Following this period, the estate was partially transformed into a cereal field before being replanted in 1975. A few years later, in 1996, Mr. de Cambon sold his estate to Annick and Jean-Pierre Marie, former executives in the retail industry.

Together, and then helped by their son Nicolas, they undertook many works and investments to give a new dynamic and give life to the domain. If the domain belongs administratively to the company "Cambon la Pelouse SCEA", it is still managed by Annick and her husband who work to produce exceptional wines. The estate has moreover been added to the official classification of Médoc crus bourgeois of 2011 as Cru Bourgeois du Haut-Médoc.

Particularities and richness of the terroir

Located in the heights, between two classified growths, Château Giscours and Cantemerle, near Margaux, on the road to Margaux and Pauillac, on the banks of the Gironde, the estate's vineyard represents an area of about 60 hectares.

The soils are composed of thin gravel and large quartenaire gravel. These gravels allow to drain efficiently and to participate in the warming of the soil. The grapes arrive thus to maturation. The main grape variety is black Merlot (about 50%). We also find Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), Cabernet Franc (18%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

In addition, the red wines are produced in the appellations Haut-Médoc and Margaux and the two great wines produced are Château Cambon La Pelouse but also Château Trois Moulins. For example, the 2005 vintage is exceptional. At once dense, balanced, rich and voluptuous, it offers exotic flavors in the mouth.

Environmental responsibilities

For several years, the estate has been committed to sustainable and organic viticulture, particularly through the implementation of environmentally friendly working methods. We note that since 2009, 6 hectares of vines are grown organically.

The domain Cambon La Pelouse also uses a traditional method to vinify its grapes. Finally, the domain is gradually joining an environmental approach to preserve the authenticity of the terroir.
