What are the best Anjou wines? Find out what the Twil community thinks

The choice of place name: already a good omen Indeed, "Cantenac" means "enchanted, enchanting" according to writings from Roman times. It was on this site that the Despujol family, already active in the Bordeaux wine business, built Château Cantenac in 1870. In 1933, a Parisian fruit and vegetable merchant, Monsieur Marache, acquired the estate. In 1937, the Roskam-Bruno family took over ownership. With this sacquisition, Albert Bruno followed in his father's footsteps: his own father had been in the wine trade and had acquired Château l'Hermitage de Mazerat in 1922. Albert Bruno also bought Château Tour de Grenet (in Lussac) in 1970.

The Château Cantenac vineyard

A passion for wine is passed down from father to son. Albert Bruno's two children took over, and in 1996, Nicole Roskam-Bruno took over management of the two châteaux. She made her mark by enlarging the estate, creating new cuvées, ensuring national and international distribution of production and opening up to wine tourism. Her sons and daughters-in-law lend her a helping hand. Château Cantenac is above all the story of a family in love with its terroir. The grape varieties grown on the 19 hectares of vines are distributed as follows: Merlot (75%), Cabernet Franc (24%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1%) on gravel, gravelly clay and clay soils. In 2019, the estate will be awarded the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) label.

The wines of Château Cantenac

Firstly, the Cantenac range (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru) with Château Cantenac Grand Cru "Classique" (with ripe fruit, fine spices and undergrowth), Château Cantenac "Sélection Madame" (with ripe fruit notes but finer spices), and Château Cantenac "Climat" (from the exceptional blend of the vintage). Château Moulin de Grenet (Lussac Saint-Emilion) also has ripe fruit notes, but is a more mineral wine. Finally, Château La Lauzette-Declercq (Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois) has aromas of ripe fruit such as cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, etc. Château Cantenac wines are best served at a temperature of between 16 and 18 degrees. Their ageing potential is between 3 and 5 years, depending on the cuvée and vintage.
