The winemaker

History


The first traces of the domain indeed go back to the 17th century with documents official documents mentioning the name "Bourdieu de La Gravette". At that time, the property belonged to Maître Alphonse Banchereau (a great notary) and was not yet recognized under the name of Couhins. When this notary acquired the land, he had at his disposal about ten of hectares with the presence of some vineyards.

In 1730, the estate passed into the hands of Jean-Baptiste Banchereau, the son. He changed considerably the face of the property by making this place more convivial and peaceful. On the vineyard, he took a closer interest than his predecessor since he took charge of the the promotion of the wines from the domain. The domain knew then a golden age in order to Unfortunately, it sank a few decades later.

In 1805, many family quarrels appeared with the subject of the succession of the estate. It was indeed a complex situation since there were 9 Banchereau children. It was finally one of the daughters, named Thérèse, who inherited it in 1822. She will make a She donated it in 1832 to one of her friends, who sold it in 1844. This buyer will only only 3 years before putting it up for auction.
In 1847, it was bought by Antoine Pestré and then resold in 1855 to Antoine Lair... We We can say that the stability was not really there.

It was not until 1883 that some serenity was restored with the arrival of Catherine Sérès, granddaughter of Antoine Lair and wife of Victor Hanappier. The castle was then restored and and embellished, especially the gardens. The Hanappiers as well as the Gasquetons (the two families families became allied in the 20th century) played a major role in the history of the estate, which they which they improved in all aspects... In 1959, the quality of the wines was recognized by the INAO by classifying the estate as a Classified Growth of Graves.

A new name


After a succession of difficult vintages and the death of Edouard Gasqueton, the estate the estate went through another dark period. Edouard's widow decided to pull up the vineyard but André Lurton saved a few remaining hectares. Another part will be left to the INRA (National Institute of Agronomic Research).

In 1972, André Lurton bought 1.5 hectares of vines from this organization and thus created the Château Couhins-Lurton. In 1992, he became the purchaser of a whole domain by taking over the the cellars and the outbuildings. 6 years later, he undertook major redevelopment work which which will allow to welcome in 2002 the first grapes of cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon and merlot.

This was the resurrection for this domain which is today of a surface of 27 hectares (21 in red and 6 in white). The vineyard is composed of merlot (50%) and cabernet sauvignon (40%). sauvignon (40%). Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc share equally the remaining surface remaining surface. In white, the sauvignon blanc weighs 90% of the surface, completed by the sauvignon gris at 10%.

Since 2010, these vines are treated in a nature preservation approach. The Château Couhins-Lurton has obtained the HVE certification (High Environmental Value), proof of proof of a careful work throughout the year ...
