The History of Agassac Castle
A Latin inscription in the castle's underground passages indicates that the castle of Agassac was built in the 11th century. However, the first historical evidence dates from the 13th century. The first lord of the castle was Guillaume-Raymond d'Agassac.
In 1238, the castle of Agassac passed into the hands of the Gaillard de Gassac family. The estate then covered 800 hectares. In 1357, it was sold to the Albret family, then to the Pommiers family.
In 1841, the Château d'Agassac was bought by one of the greatest agronomists of his time, Marcel Richier. It was he who gave the estate its superb quality, notably by inventing the trellising of the vines.
In 1996, the Château d'Agassac - which had since become the property of the Gasqueton family - was bought by the Groupama insurance company.
The vineyard of Château d'Agassac
The vineyard of Château d'Agassac extends over the southern part of Ludon-Médoc. It is divided between two gravelly hilltops and an area of sandy gravel.
The first gravelly croup corresponds to the fifth terrace of Médoc gravel. Its structure is favourable to the flow of water, which results in the early ripening of the grapes. The second gravelly section is deeper. Its high proportion of clay produces more robust wines. It corresponds to the fourth terrace of Médoc gravel.
The current vineyard extends over 43 hectares. The grape varieties are 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 25 years.
The reasoned viticulture of Château d'Agassac
Château d'Agassac has been committed to sustainable viticulture since the beginning of the century. Chemical treatments have been eliminated in favour of more environmentally friendly methods. The working of the soil and the absence of weeding respect the biology of the terroir. Insects that predate harmful mites - typhlodromes - have been introduced to avoid chemical acaricide treatments.
