The winemaker

The history of Château de Castelneau

Château de Castelneau has been producing wine since the 12th century, as evidenced by archives that mention an exchange of land for vines in 1185.

Before Castel nau (nau = new), there was Castel vieil, dating back to the 11th century. The forerunner of today's château was built in the 14th century, in the rudimentary form of a quadrilateral, with a tower at each corner, linked by a parapet walk. The present Château de Castelneau was built at the end of the 16th century, with a much more sophisticated architecture.

After being weakened by a magnitude 7 earthquake on August 10, 1759, Château de Castelneau was burnt down in 1792, during the French Revolution. It was subsequently rebuilt and sold. The Seignouret family who bought it were the ancestors of the current owner, Loïc de Roquefeuil. The latter took over the running of Château de Castelneau with his wife Diane in 1988.

Loïc and Diane de Roquefeuil's second son, Émilion de Roquefeuil, has already taken over the family business. At the age of 14, he began renovating the family estate. He then left to train and discover the world of work, before joining the team at Château de Castelneau at the age of 29, and settling down permanently to continue the family tradition.

The Château de Castelneau vineyard

The geographical location occupied by Château de Castelneau is considered the Mesopotamia of Aquitaine, in the etymological sense of the term: mesos=mi/potamos=river. The estate sits like the watchtower of the Entre-deux-Mers region, overlooking the Garonne and Dordogne valleys.

The Château de Castelneau estate extends over just under 100 hectares, nestled among woods of oak, chestnut, hornbeam and acacia. Some forty hectares are planted with cereals (wheat, corn and sunflower), sometimes left fallow to allow the soil to rest. Some 30 hectares are devoted to vines, with two-thirds planted in reds and one-third in whites.

The Château de Castelneau vineyard is grown as ecologically as possible. For nearly thirty years, the estate has been redesigned with hedges whose wildlife watches over the vines and avoids the use of insecticides.
