The Castle with Multiple Owners

The construction of the present château was completed in 1572 and undertaken by Gaston de L'Isle, mayor of Bordeaux. At that time, it was Jeanne de L'Isle who inherited it. On her death, the castle was heavily in debt and was even seized. It then went through a complex legal period linked to a succession. It subsequently had many owners.

In September 1994, Jean Leprince became the owner of the château. It was then his daughter and son-in-law, Valérie and Xavier Péneau, who ran the estate. After Jean's death, the château again experienced financial difficulties and had to be sold. In 2003, James Grégoire acquired it and sold it in 2013 to a Chinese businessman, Lam Lok. A terrible accident made Lam Lok's widow the sole owner of the château.

The estate

This beautiful wine estate is located on the right bank of Bordeaux, on the heights of the Fronsac appellation. It is in fact the largest property in Fronsac. It produces wines mainly from Merlot for the reds and Sauvignon for the whites. It has gigantic underground cellars dug into the limestone rock and which extend over 8 hectares. This is where all the wines are kept and it is also a Mecca for wine tourism in Gironde, open to everyone. The vines are spread over the limestone plateau and the slopes on molasses soils.

The oenologist Claude Gros has been present since 2003 and works to "perpetuate the tradition of excellence of the wines born and raised on the lands of the River". The grape varieties of the 53 plots of land on the estate give pride of place to Merlot, with 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and a small touch of Malbec. Château de la Rivière was awarded in 2017 by the "Best Of Wine Tourism" competition in the "Architecture & Landscapes" category and received an award in 2018 in the "Art & Culture" category.

At Château de la Rivière, you have the opportunity to discover the winemaker's craft, the rich history of the château but also incredible underground cellars where more than 700,000 bottles slumber in ideal natural conditions. The green spaces allow long walks with landscaped gardens and the Ladies' Bath.
