The winemaker

History

In Saint-Emilion, Château Faugères is recognized as an institution. Anchored for centuries in this wine-producing landscape, it impresses by its constancy and its philosophy. Its history begins in 1619, when a man named André Faugères cultivated vines for the first cultivated vines on the land of Saint-Emilion on his own behalf.

Of course, this winegrower gave his name to his brand new property. At that time, he he did not know that he had just put his signature on one of the estates that would would still be in business 400 years later. But the property did not yet have a castle at that time. It was not until the 18th century that it was built. The story goes that that it would be a descendant of André who would have ordered its construction but we have no but we have no certainty or trace of any document.

But what we know for sure is the arrival of the Esquissaud family in 1823. Taking the reins, François Esquissaud begins an association which will last approximately 150 years between the domain and his family. The latter passed the torch from generation to generation while taking care of the vineyard, so dear to them. At first, Jean Esquissaud (son of François) was an outstanding businessman and was of major importance in the success of in the success of Château Faugères.

He married Catherine Musset in 1837 and they had two children: François and Françoise Isaure Esquissaud. The lineage continued the work until 1987, when the Guisez family (direct descendant) took over. Pierre-Bernard and his wife Corinne have done a great work to improve the techniques used in the vineyard as well as in the cellar. An effort that paid off as Château Faugères was sold to Silvio Denz...

The man who changed the game

This man who dedicated his life to the world of luxury made his fortune in perfumery. By buying Château Faugères in 2005, he intends to realize one of his dreams: to make his own wine. his own wine. He closely follows the whole wine year with his teams and he also offered himself the advice of the star oenologist of the Bordeaux area: Michel Rolland.

The arrival of Silvio Denz marked a turning point in the development of the estate. New investments to be at the cutting edge of technology and thus produce superior quality wines... This manager makes his desires speak!

In 2009, it is no longer a castle but a cathedral of wine that is erected. Indeed, the was designed by the architect Mario Botta, and overhangs the vineyard with this particular shape and overlooks the vineyard with its particular cathedral-like shape, hence its nickname.

This winery sees the teams working on 37 hectares of vines, planted mostly merlot (85%) with a touch of cabernet franc (10%) and cabernet sauvignon (5%). The 65,000 bottles produced each year highlight, through tastings, a sustainable viticulture on clay-limestone slopes. This complex viticultural landscape as well as the qualities of the team have allowed Château Faugères to join the circle of Saint-Emilion Grand Cru in 2012...
