The winemaker

Founded in 1810, Château Fourcas Hosten is a classified Cru Bourgeois Supérieur wine estate located in the northern Gironde department in the village of Listrac-Médoc, nicknamed the "roof of the Médoc". It produces certified organic white and red Grands Vins de Garde in the Listrac-Médoc appellation.

The vineyard

The vineyard covers 50 hectares and 90% of the grape varieties are divided between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc historically completes the vineyard, but Petit Verdot, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris have also been planted more recently. Two terroirs stand out: the clay-limestone soils of the Listrac plain, and the Fourcas plateau, where Pyrenean gravel predominates.

For the past 10 years, the team has been reflecting on the impact of the estate on the environment, and has embarked on an EMS (Environmental Management System) approach. The vines are cultivated using integrated farming methods as part of a global approach to environmental protection, and all the plots meet the requirements of organic farming specifications. The estate has been HVE level 3 certified since 2017 and Ecocert certified since 2020 for the white cuvées and 2021 for the reds.

In 2010, ambitious replanting of the vineyard began with a 10-year program. Based on soil studies, the aim is to determine which grape varieties are best suited to the geological and climatic specificities of each plot. The Listrac plots are now home to white grape varieties and Merlot, which thrive on clay-limestone soils, while the Fourcas plateau concentrates Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. This work continues with totally plot-specific management for all vineyard care and soil work. Harvesting is mainly done by hand, and is individualized for each zone.

The estate

The estate has benefited from major investments that have enabled the construction of state-of-the-art production tools. It now boasts 40 small vats for individualized, parcel-based vinification. Aging lasts at least a year, and is also carried out in new barrels, concrete vats or one-year-old barrels, depending on the specific characteristics of each cuvée.

The wine-making process is overseen by oenologist Eric Boissenot. In the cellar, the grapes are worked by gravity, which ensures optimal storage conditions and preserves the aromatic richness of the fruit.

The wines

The Château Fourcas Hosten 2020 vintage is made from a blend of 58% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc respectively. It's a luscious red wine with an intense aromatic bouquet of black fruits. The palate is balanced and slightly oaky, with elegant tannins and a long finish.

Les cèdres d'Hosten is a great, elegant, pure wine with fresh, fruity aromas. The 2016 vintage is predominantly made with Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Petit Verdot. The Merlot lends roundness and suppleness to the cuvées, revealing a well-balanced aromatic palette. The palate is fresh and dominated by fruit, with a dense finish.

Le Blanc de Fourcas Hosten is a dry white made from grapes picked at perfect ripeness. It is the Château's first certified organic cuvée. It is a well-balanced wine offering beautiful complexity with aromas of pineapple, pear, lychee and notes of white flowers.
