The winemaker

The history of Château Gazin

Pomerol's vineyards date back to the 12th century, and developed until the Revolution under the aegis of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta. According to records, in the 18th century, the Knights built the Hospital de Pomeyrols, intended to accommodate pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The name of the estate's second wine, Hospitalet de Gazin, is a tribute to this history. Château Gazin itself was built on the site of the original building.

The current owners - the de Bailliencourt, dit Courcol family - are the fifth generation of winegrowers since Louis Soualle, on both their paternal and maternal sides.

In 1214, the King of France himself, Philippe Auguste, bestowed the nickname Courcol, meaning short collar, on one of the family's ancestors. The latter had distinguished himself during the Battle of Bouvines, decisive for the future of the Kingdom of France.

The Château Gazin vineyard

The Château Gazin vineyard covers 26 hectares in a single block, on the high terrace of the Pomerol terroir. 90% of the vines are planted with Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 7% and Cabernet Franc for 3%. The average age of the vines is 35 years.

The estate is run in the traditional way and with respect for the environment. Fertilizers are organic, and no chemical pesticides or herbicides are used. The grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot, to ensure perfect ripeness.

Château Gazin's soil consists of Günzian gravel on the surface. The subsoil is clay-gravel. It is composed of green and blue clays, rich in iron oxides. This type of terroir is ideally suited to vine irrigation, with moderate but constant water regulation. The estate produces up to 100,000 bottles a year, 86% of which are exported.

The wines of Château Gazin

Château Gazin wines can be enjoyed after a few years of cellaring, but they can also wait more than twenty years in your cellar. The predominance of Merlot brings remarkable finesse, with a very broad aromatic range.

Château Gazin Pomerol 2015

The 2015 Château Gazin vintage is a blend of 95.2% Merlot and 4.8% Cabernet Franc. This is a powerful wine with a particularly expressive nose. The fruit aromas are dominated by blueberry and complemented by black cherry. The palate is long and full-bodied. Red and black fruits are combined with noble tannins.

L'Hospitalet de Gazin 2018

A second AOP Pomerol wine, L'Hospitalet de Gazin, boasts a dense, sustained purplish color. The nose is voluptuous, blending blackcurrant, blueberry and black cherry. The palate is remarkably balanced and structured. Its tannins are round and well-proportioned. The finish remains fresh to the end.
