The winemaker

The history of Château Giscours

The birth of the estate is said to date back to the 14th century, but it was only recognised in 1552 by the deed of sale. The property we know today was created by Marc Promis. He particularly enlarged the property (nearly 200 hectares, 50 of which were under vine) and built the current château, which consists of the imposing residence, several stables, wine presses, cellars and vats (the latter removed in 1835).

In 1847, the great Parisian banker Jean-Pierre Pescatir bought the estate and made major changes to it by renovating the château and the farm buildings. From 1875, the new owner Edouard Cruse entrusted the estate's gardens to the landscape gardener Eugène Bülher and had a model farmhouse built by the Duphot architects, called "Ferme Suzanne" in honour of his wife Suzanne Baour.

The awarding of the 1855 Grands Crus classification established the reputation of Giscours. Many owners succeeded one another, until Nicolas Tari bought the estate in 1953. He modernised the estate and expanded it. His son Pierre succeeded him in 1970 and continued the modernisation effort.

The vineyard

The vineyard is in production on 92 hectares, on four types of coarse and medium gravel spread over four distinct hills. The current grape varieties grown on the estate are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, supplemented by 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The density of the vines is very high, from 8,300 to 10,000 vines per hectare, with an average age of The average age of the vines is 40 years for more than a quarter of them.

The Margalais vineyard extends about twenty-five kilometres north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde. In the centre of the appellation, a plateau of white gravel, six kilometres by two, produces the majority of the Grands Crus classés. On the periphery of the property, the gravelly hillocks separated by drainage ditches are islands of vines. The grape varieties authorised for the appellation are Cabernet Franc N, Cabernet Sauvignon N, Merlot N, Carménère, Côt N and Petit Verdot N.

Chateau Giscours pairings

This is a wine that goes perfectly with red meats. The delicacy of the Margaux accompanies game meats such as duck or partridge, and the inevitable local recipe: Entrecote à la bordelaise. It also goes very well with fish such as grilled or semi-cooked tuna. As far as cheese is concerned, it goes perfectly with Brie de Meaux or Saint Nectaire.
