The winemaker

The history of the estate

The history of Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse began in the middle of the 17th century, when Arnaud Ducasse bought a small house on the banks of the Pauillac River. One of his descendants, Pierre Ducasse, will really make the estate enter the wine history. He bought several parcels to enlarge the vineyard until his death in 1797.

His son then took over the 60-hectare estate, nearly two-thirds of which were planted with vines. In 1820, he built the current castle in front of the Gironde River. In 1855, on the occasion of the imperial classification of the wines of the left bank, the castle is classified fifth great growth, under the name of Artigues Arnaud. The castle will take the name of Grand-Puy Ducasse in 1932.

In 1971, the château was revitalized and restructured after its purchase by new partners. The cellar is modernized and the treatment of the vines is optimized. Since 2004, the château has been bought by CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Crédit Agricole Group.

The terroir

Located in the terroir of the Pauillac AOC, the estate of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse extends over 40 hectares of vines, spread over 3 large parcels . The property is bordered to the north by Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet. In the center, the vines occupy part of the Bourdieu de Grand Puy, and the Saint-Lambert plateau to the south.

The vineyard is located on soils of gravelly sicilaise Garonne, typical of the terroir of the Pauillac appellation. With an average age of 25 years, the vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (62%) to bring complexity, structure and power to the wine, as well as Merlot (38%) to give suppleness and roundness to the blends.

The wines

The Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is an elegant, structured wine with a complex bouquet. Typical of the Pauillac appellation, it is aged in new barrels to develop silky tannins and woody notes. A wine for laying down, it is advisable to wait between 5 and 8 years to appreciate all its qualities.

The Prélude à Grand-Puy Ducasse cuvée is made from younger vines and with shorter maturation than the first wine (which requires 12 to 16 months). Nevertheless, it too presents empyreumatic and woody notes, accompanied by a bouquet of red and black fruits. Nice balance between structure and roundness.
