The winemaker

The history of the estate

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste's history began in 1737, when the very first residence was built on the estate. The castle as we can contemplate it today, was built in 1855 by Pierre-Frédéric Lacoste, at the head of the domain since 1844. The castle left the Lacoste family in 1920. In the 1930s, its new owner decided to spend most of his time in Bordeaux and thus gradually abandoned the estate.

In 1978, the Borie family bought the property and decided to give it new life by reviving the soul of the château. In the wine tradition, the Borie family has evolved in the vineyards for centuries (we can mention the Ducru-Beaucaillou estate or the Batailley castle).

François-Xavier and Marie-Hélène Borie thus undertook to renovate the vat room and the cellar, and the vines were restored in order to produce exceptional wines again.

The terroir

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is located right in the middle of the terroir of the Pauillac appellation, on the banks of the Gironde River. The estate's parcels are located west of the village, 20 meters below the sea. These lands see the convergence of major assets such as the quality of the soils, a favorable climate and the regional heritage of a demanding know-how.

The domain is located on gravel soils, alluvial pebbles that ensure a beautiful drainage of water. Geological witnesses of the quaternary era, these gravel soils are original and very rich. These soils, composed of gravel mixed with sand and clay, are more or less deep layers very suitable for high quality viticulture. Indeed, these soils keep the heat in order to better restore it to the vine, which eliminates the thermal differences and facilitates the ripening of the grapes.

As for the climate, it is predominantly oceanic, strongly influenced by the proximity of the ocean and the Gironde estuary. The climate of the region is very balanced, with hot summers and mild winters. In addition, there is the mixing of winds coming from the ocean and the estuary, which creates a favorable microclimate.

In terms of grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon is largely dominant (70%) and brings structure and power to the wines. We also find Merlot (25%) which brings roundness to the wines. And finally Cabernet Franc (5%) which brings a touch of florality and vegetality to the wines.

The wines

The Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the first wine of the estate, a grand cru classified in 1855. The color is ruby red, and can turn to purple/oil red with age. On the nose, the aromas of ripe fruit, spices and empyreumatic notes are very present. In the mouth, the wine is well structured, with melted tannins. This wine is destined for aging.

The Lacoste Borie cuvée is the second wine of the estate. It can be enjoyed earlier than the first wine of the estate. On the nose and palate, we find the same attributes as its big brother, but with more minerality, less substance and complexity though.
