Château Haut-Bailly

3.2
(9 customer reviews)
Château Haut-Bailly is situated on one of the highest ridges on the left bank of the Garonne. It has 30 hectares of vineyards in a single block and is devoted exclusively to red grape varieties. The foundations of Haut-Bailly are made up of a sandy soil mixed with gravel from the Tertiary period. The subsoil of the latter constitutes one of the greatest characteristics of the Château: the faluns or petrified fossil stone. It can also be seen on the walls of the cellar. Thanks to this soil, the vines draw minerals and micronutrients from it, which ensure a rich aroma. Find out more

The winemaker

Following in the footsteps of Château Haut-Bailly

The traces of vine cultivation at Château Haut-Bailly date back to the 15th century. But it was in 1630 that Firmin Le Bailly, a Parisian banker, became the owner and gave it his name. At the end of the 19th century, Alcide Bellot des Minières was one of the most notable owners. This engineer who was nicknamed "King of the Winegrowers" was able to bring the wines of Haut-Bailly to a high level, very close to the first growths.

It was also this successful entrepreneur who built the Château we all know today. The beginning of the 20th century was chaotic because of the bad choices made to fight against phylloxera. But also due to the numerous changes of owner.

In 1955, it was given a new lease of life thanks to Daniel Sanders who acquired the property. His son succeeded him brilliantly thanks to the production of some twenty high-class vintages. Then came Robert Wilmers, an American banker who bought the estate in 1998. He kept Jean Sanders and his granddaughter, Véronique, to run the vineyard.

A timeless vineyard

The Château Haut-Bailly vineyard covers 30 hectares on gravel, sand and clay soils. Here a wide selection of grape varieties are planted:

60% Cabernet Sauvignon

34% Merlot

3% Petit Verdot

3% Cabernet Franc

Haut-Bailly owes its reputation and its quality wines to this great diversity and variety of soils. Château Haut-Bailly hides a small treasure, and not the least: 4 hectares of vines of more than a century composed of 6 grape varieties planted by Alcide Bellot des Minières.

The wines of the Château

Yields are kept below the permitted limit and are around 45 hectolitres per hectare. This means that annual production is around 160,000 bottles for Château Haut-Bailly and La Parde de Haut-Bailly wines. The Château was among the first estates to produce a second wine. "Domaine de la Parde" was the first to appear in 1967 and was taken over in 1979 as "La Prade de Haut-Bailly". Since 1987, it has produced a third wine in certain years under the name of "Pessac-Léognan".

The winemaking operations are carried out all year round by hand by passionate craftsmen with great know-how. In order to improve the quality of its wines, Château Haut-Bailly is committed to visionary initiatives. Such as molecular research into the origin of the aroma associated with the ageing of the wines.
