The winemaker

The terroir of Château Haut-Brion

The Château Haut-Brion vineyard is located in the commune of Pessac and covers 51 hectares. 48 are planted with red grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The remaining 3 are planted with white Sémillon and Sauvignon vines. The gravelly soil is made up of small pebbles representing different varieties of quartz. The subsoil is a unique blend of sand, clay, limestone and falun (shell limestone).

The gravel deposits so beneficial to the excellence of the wine range in thickness from twenty centimeters to over 3 meters. The slopes of Château Haut-Brion are perfectly exposed to the sun, and their slope ensures natural drainage. This is reinforced by an extensive network of small streams and rivers, such as the Peugue and Serpent, which are tributaries of the Garonne. With hot, dry summers and mild autumns, the vines benefit from a climate that favors them. Their altitude, between 20 and 30 meters above sea level, enables them to escape the fog of the lower Garonne valley and the sometimes heavy rains of the Gironde moors.
