The winemaker

History

To learn a little more about this property, we need to go back several centuries and stop in 1770. In that year, the vines were already present on the Saint-Estèphe terroirs and belonged to a certain Sylvestre Fatin, who later bequeathed them to his daughters. During its history, the estate has known several families, including the Mac-Carthy family in 1825, then the Poissonnier family in 1848.

The Poissonnier family took over the 7-hectare estate and gave it its mythical name for the first time: Haut-Marbuzet. The estate, without really standing out, continued to be maintained for a century, until a new change took place...

It was in 1952 that Château Haut-Marbuzet wrote a new page in its history. The arrival of a man, unqualified in agricultural circles but a wine merchant, changed all that. Hervé Duboscq took over the estate's 7 hectares of vines, which were fragmented and in the process of being dispersed. With his sense of innovation, he developed a new style of wine, creating the feat of raising the banner of the Sainte-Estèphe appellation. It seemed to be the winning recipe, as it won over the public.

Following his success, he bought up several plots of land formerly belonging to the Mac Carthy family, gradually building up a vast vineyard. His son Henri Duboscq joined him in 1962, contributing his knowledge of viticulture and winemaking, in particular the use of barrels for aging wines. The quality of the wines improved, approaching that of the greatest in the appellation. Henri was also one of the first to welcome customers directly to the estate, which helped him build a loyal clientele who continue to tell his stories to this day...

A style all its own

Today, Château Haut-Marbuzet covers an area of 75 hectares, with a terroir steeped in a rich and eventful history that still transmits just as much emotion in the estate's wines.

It's an unusual terroir, which is highly conducive to the production of great wines. Several grape varieties, such as Cabernet-Sauvignon (responsible for 50% of the vineyard's vines), Merlot (40%) and Cabernet-Franc (10%), thrive on this land, which is cultivated using integrated farming methods (no chemical weedkillers). Care is taken throughout the year, with manual harvesting and masterful vinification, including ageing in new oak barrels for each vintage.

The 400,000 bottles of Château Haut-Marbuzet are served on tables the world over, and it's easy to see why they're so popular: opulent, rich, long-keeping wines. Promoted to the rank of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2013, these wines are a surprise in an appellation that has not always been appreciated for its true worth...
