The winemaker

The history of Chateau la Gaffelière

Between the 11th and 15th centuries, the site of Château la Gaffelière was reserved for a leper colony. The sick who went to beg on the roads leaned on their stick, which was also called a gaff. This is why the lepers were called the gaffs, which explains the name of the future castle.

The current owner is Léo de Malet Roquefort. He is the heir of one of the oldest families in the Saint Emilion region. Guillaume Malet was already found at the famous battle of Hastings in 1066. He was the first to be knighted.

In 1654, Louis Malet de la Jorie married Marguerite de Calvimont, who inherited the feudal castle of Roquefort at the death of her father. This date marks the birth of the Malet Roquefort branch. The Château la Gaffelière has always remained in the family. Léo de Malet Roquefort knew his inheritance was assured, thanks to his children: Stanislas, Anastasia, Bérangère, Guillaume and Alexandre.

The vineyard of Château la Gaffelière

The vineyard of Château la Gaffelière covers 38 hectares, 22 of which are in the Premier Grand Cru Classé. Its parcels are classified into three distinct zones.

1 - The asteriated limestone plateau is composed of layers of 3 to 5 meters of clay and green marl that are wedged between two layers of limestone. The plots are located at an altitude of 90 meters.
2 - The south to southwest facing slope is ideal for the vine, with an optimal exposure. The natural drainage of the water and the outcrops of clayey molasses of the Fronsadais in the subsoil regulate the hydric and mineral supply of the vines.
3 - The foot of the slope is made up of deep sands carbonated by colluvium. This part of the terroir gives birth to the finest and most delicate grapes of Château la Gaffelière.

In the 2000s, the vineyard was completely restructured. It is planted with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years. The viticulture is reasoned, with the least possible artificial intervention. The soils are worked mechanically and the between-rows are naturally grassed. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The Clos de la Gaffelière

Le Clos de la Gaffelière is a Premier Grand Cru Classé, belonging to the AOC Saint Émilion. It is a very great wine, elegant, harmonious and very pure. It is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Remarkably constructed, it is a powerful and easy-drinking wine. The nose is rich in fruit, especially blackberries and blueberries.

Its share of Cabernet Franc gives it an extraordinary liveliness. The palate is complex, with a powerful frame that brings out the red fruits. The tannins are fine and elegant.
