The winemaker

History

It was under Henry IV in the 16th century that Château La Lagune was first heard of. Benefiting from a combination of factors (climate, soil, etc.) that were very favourable to the vine, it was modestly exploited until 1730. It was during this 18th century that it began to be considered as a real wine estate.

A family also marked its rise: the Sèze. For several centuries, the property belonged to different generations of the family, which was very popular in Bordeaux. At that time, the wines of the estate already had a distinctive style and were popular with the clientele.

A few years later, it was the consecration with a request from Napoleon III, who wished to set up a classification of the wines for the Universal Exhibition in Paris. We are in 1855 and the famous classification of classified growths is born. Château La Lagune became the Haut-Médoc with the highest distinction, as the 3rd Cru Classé (La Tour Carnet was the second Haut-Médoc, 4th Cru Classé).

For nearly a century, the estate maintained this image of excellence and enjoyed its success. Unfortunately, many events were to affect the château and its occupants. In 1939, the Second World War broke out and caused a great problem in the French vineyards with an obvious lack of manoeuvre. Once the war was over, it was the great frosts that took over in 1956 and devastated the production.

Château La Lagune recovered in the 1970s after a new owner by the name of Georges Brunet invested a considerable amount of money to put it back on the right track. In 1999, it was Jean-Jacques Frey who bought the estate and let his daughter Caroline Frey run it...

Respect for the environment

Caroline Frey has been establishing her touch for several years now and we can already see the results. One of the watchwords of Château La Lagune is respect for the environment with viticulture based on organic and biodynamic ideologies. More than just an idea, the approach took concrete form in 2016 with organic certification, which demonstrates that the estate is delivering on all its promises. This approach is implemented on the 80 hectares that make up the Château but also in all the oenological operations.

A very modern vat room and strict rules concerning the quality of the grapes, manual harvesting and blending allow the estate to perfect its wines and keep this notion of purity, of a wine more in tune with nature.

Château La Lagune shows intensity during tastings, with a beautiful structure and a very appreciable ageing potential. It is a whole terroir that expresses itself in the glass and reveals to us without doubt one of the best references in Bordeaux...
