The History of Chateau Latour-Martillac

The first part of the name of the estate, Latour, comes from the tower that already stood in the courtyard of honor of the fort that preceded the castle in the 12th century. At the end of the 18th century, the fortress was demolished and its stones were used to build the castle.

In 1871, Edouard Kressmann, who had just founded his trading house in Bordeaux, noticed the white wines of the estate. He passed on his passion to his eldest son, Alfred, who acquired the château in 1930. To differentiate himself from the homonymous château in the Médoc, the new owner simply transformed the name by adding the commune and thus was born Château Latour-Martillac.

The vineyard represented then about fifteen hectares, essentially planted in white. Alfred completed it with new plots of Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 1953, the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine classified the Graves. Sixteen châteaux were distinguished. Château Latour-Martillac was one of the six estates classified as both red and white.

The restructuring of Château Latour-Martillac was then continued by Alfred's son, Jean Kressmann, who took over the management in 1954. The size of the vineyard was thus doubled.

Jean's children, Tristan and Loïc, manage the estate today. They have further expanded the vineyard with some plots.

The Château Latour-Martillac vineyard

The vineyard of Chateau Latour-Martillac today extends over 56 hectares. A mosaic of gravels occupies the ridge of the Martillac plateau which dominates the estate. The soil is composed of lydian, jasper and flint, which makes it a poor and draining soil, ideal for growing Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The part closer to the Garonne is more clayey and chalky, still dominated by some gravel. It is used for the cultivation of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Another older parcel, Grattecap (from the Latin "gratum caput" which means "vines with delicious wine") is dedicated to Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Each plot of Château Latour-Martillac is vinified separately with the greatest respect for the environment. Harvesting is done by hand.

The wines of Château Latour-Martillac

The wines of Château Latour-Martillac are renowned within the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Each range is declined in red and white.

Chateau Latour-Martillac

Château Latour-Martillac is the first wine of the estate. It benefits from the grapes of the best parcels.

Lagrave-Martillac

Lagrave-Martillac is the second wine of Château Latour-Martillac. The red version was created in 1986, then its white version in 1990. It uses plot selections from the estate's younger vines and enjoys the same care as the first wine in its vinification.

Lacroix-Martillac

Lacroix-Martillac is made from the vines closest to the château and is also the result of parcel selections.

Chateau Langlet

Château Langlet has belonged to the Kressmann family since 1999. It is one of the oldest crus in the region and is located in the commune of Cabanac and Villagrains.
