The winemaker

The history of Château Latour

Château Latour has had many owners. Thanks to the Bonnin de La Bonninière de Beaumont family, who occupied it from 1840 to 1962, a new winery was built between 1862 and 1864, by a famous Bordeaux architect: Henri Duphot.

After 1962, it was successively taken over by various investment funds, before becoming the property of François Pinault in 1993. The descendants of the Beaumont family retain a minority shareholding.

The Château Latour vineyard

The Château Latour vineyard covers 90 hectares, half of which surrounds the château. This part is dedicated to the production of Château Latour's fine wines and is nicknamed "L'Enclos". The terroir allows the vines to see the River - meaning the Gironde estuary - which, according to tradition, is a prerequisite for producing the finest wines.
The soils are gravelly, with a very stony, poor and permeable subsoil. There are also clayey areas, which led to the creation of artificial drainage in the 19th century, still in force today.

. The quality of the wine is due in part to this permeable soil, as well as to the high density of the plantations. The vines are close together, each producing a small number of grapes. As with most Médoc estates, Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 80% of the grape varieties planted. Next comes Merlot for 15%. The remainder is planted with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

The prestige of Château Latour wines

Château Latour wine represents French art de vivre around the world. Only 5 Médoc estates share the Premier Grand Cru appellation. Wines from l'Enclos often unleash passions at auction. Château Latour's total production averages 210,000 bottles a year.

The Grand Vin of Château Latour

The Grand Vin of Château Latour comes only from the old vines of the Enclos, which must be at least 60 years old. Grapes from the finest vines are used in its production: Gravettes, Sarmentier, Pièce du Château, among others. The Grand Vin du Château Latour is an exceptional wine for laying down.

The Terroir

The Terroir comes from the heart of the Enclos. These are the only parcels that bring the elegance, depth and sumptuousness we've come to expect from these wonderful wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for over 90% of the blend, giving it its magnificent intense red color and complexity forged by ripe fruit. The wine has silky, racy tannins. It is also an exceptional wine for laying down.
