The History of Chateau le Puy

The estate of Château le Puy has been operated by the Amoreau family since 1610. Each generation has succeeded the previous one, after following studies to improve the exploitation and manage it in the most ecological way possible. The current part of the Château was built in 1832 by one of the grandfathers, Barthélemy, but the original part dates from the beginning of the 17th century.

The vineyard of Château le Puy and the know-how of the Amoreau family

The vineyard of Château le Puy is located on the same rocky plateau as Saint Émilion and Pomerol. It overlooks the beautiful Dordogne Valley and includes the Côteau des Merveilles, renowned for the excellence of its vintage. Château le Puy is the second highest geodesic point in the Gironde department. Each generation innovates to make the wine of Château le Puy even better.

Since 1921, thanks to Jean, the estate practices 100% destemming to obtain a more supple and aromatic wine. In 1934, it is Robert who decides to return to the process of elaboration of the wine its initial form. He then re-establishes the fermentation by immersed cap or forced extraction.

Since 1990, Pascal and Jean Pierre have decided to eliminate the addition of sulfites. Thanks to the scrupulous sorting of the grapes, the wines are not sulfited, yeasted or chaptalized during fermentation. They are aged for 24 months, with no added sulfur dioxide.

The introduction of biodynamics

The wines of Chateau le Puy are aged according to a precise lunar calendar. This practice allows them to express all their youthful qualities, with a very long ageing capacity. They are marketed from the 1998 vintage in the purest " Original Expression of the Terroir ". Château le Puy uses organic and biodynamic cultivation, which means a return to the know-how of the ancestors, without the addition of chemical fertilizers, herbicides or synthetic insecticides.

The composition of the Château le Puy vineyard

The vineyard of Château le Puy covers 51 hectares, divided into three parcels located on the same rocky plateau. The soil is 10% clay-siliceous on clay-limestone bedrock, 65% clay-siliceous on limestone bedrock and 25% clay-limestone on limestone bedrock. The red grape varieties are 85% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec and 1% Carmenère. For the white, the grape variety is 100% Semillon.

The wines of Château le Puy

The red wines of Château le Puy

The red wines of Château le Puy display a garnet color. It initially appears ruby-colored, with orange reflections, for the young vintages, before darkening with age. The nose is fruity, with aromas of ripe red fruits. We clearly feel a dominant blackcurrant, redcurrant, then flavors of burnt almonds and sometimes mushrooms. The mouth is round, with velvety tannins. It is long and deep, pleasantly complex. They pair wonderfully with game and red meats, as well as cheese platters.

The white wines of Château le Puy

Château le Puy produces a dry white wine with a golden glittery color. Its nose appears very fruity, with fine aromas of quince jam, thyme honey. The palate is full, with a supple attack and a fine finish.
