The history of the Château Léoville Barton estate

The history of Château Léoville Barton began three centuries ago and spans 10 generations. The dynasty was founded by Thomas Barton in 1722. In 1826, Hugh Barton bought part of the Léoville estate and took the opportunity to rename the property. In 1855, Léoville Barton was classified Second Grand Cru Saint Julien. After several years of restoring the estate's damaged vines, Ronald Barton was rewarded with several vintages from 1948 to 1959. Since 2010, Lilian Barton Sartorius has been at the head of the vineyard. She is accompanied by her two children.

Terroir and vineyard characteristics

The terroir of Château Léoville Barton lies on one of the gravelly ridges of La Garonne, facing the Gironde, right in the heart of the Saint Julien appellation. The terroir is characterized by the multiple heights of gravel created by the river. The subsoil is clay-gravel, which helps to regulate the sometimes difficult climatic conditions throughout the year. The 50 hectares of Château Léoville Barton vines are planted in gravelly soil and on a clay-based subsoil. The vines are planted with traditional Médoc grape varieties: 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

At Château Léoville Barton it's the hand of man and the environment that are emphasized, from pruning to harvesting. Since 2012, over 12% of the estate has been farmed organically. This proportion increases year after year. Château Léoville Barton has chosen to practice integrated viticulture. The estate was awarded the High Environmental Value label in 2020. The oldest plot dates back to 1953. The average age of the vineyard is 40 years.

The wines of the Château Léoville Barton estate

The Léoville Barton Reserve has a blending percentage that evolves each year, but always has the vineyard's three grape varieties, including a big chunk of Cabernet Sauvignon (over 70% since 2006). The 2016 vintage has a beautiful ruby color and reveals notes of red fruit, black fruit and licorice. On tasting, the wine is full-bodied, fleshy and suave. It's powerful but retains the finesse typical of Saint Julien wines.

Chateau Léoville Barton is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2016 vintage, with its deep, intense ruby color, has notes of black fruit and a touch of ink. On the palate, the freshness of red fruits is felt.
