The history of Château Lilian Ladouys

The first historical traces of Château Lilian Ladouys date back to 1564, when it was still called the Domaine de La Doys. It was part of the fiefdom of Jacques de Becoyran, seigneur de Lafite and master of the Médoc.

From the 18th century onwards, Château Lilian Ladouys became the property of the Barre family, who held it for over a century and a half. During the 19th century, extensive work was undertaken to give the château its current appearance, with two new towers framing the entrance. Extensive work was also carried out on the vineyards to improve the quality of the wines.

The results were convincing: in 1850, Château Lilian Ladouys was cited as one of Saint Estèphe's finest wines by the first edition of Cocks et Féret. In 1932, it was awarded Cru Bourgeois Supérieur status.

The Lorenzetti family bought Château Lilian Ladouys in 2008 and set about restructuring the vineyard, which until then had been very fragmented. A new semi-underground vat room was built in 2009 to enhance the vinification process.

The new owners take advantage of the consolidation to concentrate the appellation's best terroirs and move production upmarket. In 2018, they purchased parcels adjacent to Château Lilian Ladouys, adding Château Clauzet and Château Tour de Pez to their portfolio. The estate now covers 80 hectares. This restructuring of the estate enabled the gravel soils to be increased.

The Château Lilian Ladouys vineyard

The 80 hectares of Château Lilian Ladouys vineyards belong to the Saint Estèphe appellation. The typical Médoc soil is almost exclusively gravelly, accounting for 80% of the land, with the remainder made up of clay-limestone soils.

Half of the grape varieties are Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for the next 45%, followed by Petit Verdot (4%) and Cabernet Franc (1%). The vineyards of Château Lilian Ladouys are farmed organically. It already holds HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification.
