The winemaker

History

The stories that are told about Château Maucaillou date back to 1871. This was a momentous year as it was simply the beginning of the Petit-Laroche family as merchants. They established warehouses in Moulis and chose a very important location for the future.

Located near a railway station, trade was facilitated and the wines travelled further and faster. These warehouses were expanded over time to accommodate more and more barrels and bottles to meet the ever increasing demand...

The success of his wines made Jean Petit-Laroche want to offer his wife a home in 1875 to match their new status. The Château Maucaillou that we know today, with an architectural style mixing different periods of history, was purchased. Surrounded by 5 hectares of vines, it was a dream come true for the Petit Laroche family.

But why "Maucaillou"? In reality, it is a locality whose name means "Bad stone" in reference to a soil considered bad for plantations, especially cereal ones. But the estate has finally turned this soil into a strength by making unique wines.

In 1929, the warehouses and the château changed ownership: Roger and André Dourthe acquired them. The Dourthes lineage was also very important because by 1967, the estate had grown from 5 to 20 hectares. All their efforts have led to a single goal, which is to raise Château Maucaillou to the top of the wine world. The generations succeeded one another over the decades: Caroline, Pascal and Magali Dourthe now look after this 87 hectare estate...

A major absentee

It is precisely this fine team that implements meticulous techniques both in the vineyard and in the winery. With important and developed installations, Château Maucaillou impresses so much the richness of its soil, judged bad in the past, is felt in the 300 000 bottles produced each year. This stony soil, on which the majority of Cabernet-Sauvignon (51%) as well as Merlot (42%) and Petit Verdot (7%) are planted, allows the heat to be regulated and returned to the vines for optimal ripening of the grapes.

In the cellar, the details also count: more than 50% of the barrels are renewed each year to accommodate the grapes. The vat room, being thermo-regulated, allows us to be precise in all oenological actions (notably fermentation controls).

Greatly absent from the 1855 classification, which is otherwise unchangeable, Château Maucaillou distinguishes itself during tastings with fabulous wines, endowed with complex and concentrated aromas, finishing on a suave and delicate touch.

The estate seems to be raising its game with each passing vintage and is competing with the best Bordeaux wines...
