Château Moulin Riche linked to the history of Château Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré is 80 hectares of great terroirs managed by the Cuvelier family since 1920. The history of this estate dates back to 1638. After numerous successions, Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré de Cère, then owner of the château, added his surname to Léoville in 1840. Thus was born Château Léoville Poyferré, which became a Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1920, the Cuvelier family bought the estate (Société civile des domaines de Saint-Julien).

Respecting nature throughout the vine's annual cycle

This is the Cuvelier Family's guiding principle: it's imperative to achieve a balance between man and nature. In 2016, the château joined the Bordeaux Wine Environmental Management System, constantly improving its good practices. As a result, the estate was awarded level 3 HVE certification in 2017. A motivated and rigorous team, sharing this value of respect for nature, looks after the vines throughout the annual cycle. To reap the full benefits of the terroir, the vines must be able to root deeply. Human intervention is limited to what is strictly necessary, so that the alchemy between fruit and terroir occurs naturally.

Each winemaker is responsible for a parcel of land. The vines are planted on Garonne gravel on sand and clay. The vines are pruned using the Guyot method: gentle pruning which, by respecting the flow of sap, ensures the longevity of the vines and reduces wood diseases. These vineyard enthusiasts take meticulous care of each plot.

Harvesting is carried out by the estate team and seasonal workers: with respect for each individual vine, the grapes are harvested by hand in crates. The bunches are sorted first on the vine and then on the bunch, to ensure that only fruit of the highest quality is kept. Once in the winery, the grapes are sorted twice: first by hand, then by optical sorting. The estate has chosen to put the grapes into vats (thermo-regulated stainless steel vats) by grape variety and plot. The wine is aged for 18 months exclusively in French oak barrels.
