The winemaker

The history of the estate

Château Nénin is an estate that is centuries old. First owned by the Demay family in the 18th century, it was bought by the Paillet family in the 19th century. Then, by marriage, the Despujol family acquired the estate, before Michel Delon bought the estate from his cousins in 1997.

Important works and renovations are then undertaken. The winery was renovated and enlarged, part of the vines were replanted and the soil was drained. 4 hectares of vines were also grafted to the estate, coming from Chateau Certan Giraud.

From now on, it is Jean-Hubert Delon who manages the estate, and oversees the production of the two cuvées Nénin and Fugue de Nénin, both in the Pomerol appellation.

The terroir

Usually small in size (less than 10 hectares), Château Nénin stands out among the various Pomerol estates. Its 32 hectares of vines are spread out in a single block, one parcel set apart. The vineyard thus benefits from the diversity of the terroir, with gravelly and clayey soils.

Mostly composed of Oligocene deposits covered with gravelly alluvium formed by the Dordogne, this terroir is also composed of quartz, granite, basalt pebbles and iron dross.

Naturally, in the vineyards we find mostly Merlot (76%), but also Cabernet Franc (23%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

The cultivation of the vines is traditional and the harvest is done manually.

The wines

Château Nénin's first cuvée, the Château Nénin, is known for being a wine for aging, with tannins that soften with age. Velvety and elegant tannins, floral and fruity aromatic bouquet, such are the typical characteristics of this wine. The palate is as deep as it is complex and fruity.

The second wine of the estate, the Fugue du Nénin is more apt to be drunk quickly. The tannins are more quickly fine, very characteristic of the suppleness of Merlot. There are also very fruity aromas, such as cherry, and black currant, but also chocolate and truffle notes.
