The winemaker
The History of the Olivier Castle
Chateau Olivier was in the High Middle Ages a seigneury. It is said that its game-rich lands were a favorite hunting ground for Prince Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, Earl of Chester, Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Aquitaine, and eldest son of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault, better known by the nickname Black Prince. Since the 19th century, the estate has belonged to an old Bordeaux lineage, the de Bethmann family.
The Chateau Olivier vineyard
Chateau Olivier nestles in the heart of a vast and magnificent estate, composed of vineyards, but also of meadows and forests. It sits in the middle of a clearing where it displays its beautiful architecture and water features. Only 11 kilometers from Bordeaux, Château Olivier appears as a haven of greenery and peace, so far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Chateau Olivier has the rare distinction of being endowed with excellent terroirs for making both white and red wine. However, the latter remains the majority. It is a total of 60 hectares of gravelly soil on a clay-limestone base, which hosts six different grape varieties.
The grape varieties used for the red wine are 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, with vines of an average age of 20 years. For the white wine, the grape varieties are 55% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon and the remaining 5% Muscadelle. The vines dedicated to white wine have an average age of 30 years.
The wines of Château Olivier
Chateau Olivier Grand Cru Classé Red
Chateau Olivier Grand Cru Classé Red is made up of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It is a rich, fruity wine to which the Merlot contributes long, intense tannins. The nose is powerful and evokes small red and black fruits of the forest. The attack in the mouth is lively, with a very nice length.
Château Olivier Grand Cru Classé White
Château Olivier Grand Cru Classé White is a blend of 75% Sauvignon, 23% Semillon and 2% Muscadelle. This very fresh wine displays a fairly light yellow color. The presence of Sauvignon imposes notes of grapefruit and mandarin. The aromatic palette is enriched by the Semillon which adds aromas of candied apricot. The attack is frank and the mouth is long.
The Red Olivier Dauphin
Le Dauphin d'Olivier Rouge is made up of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. It displays an attractive garnet red color. The nose is particularly aromatic, with crisp aromas of ripe red fruits and jam. The mouth is long, both round and fleshy. The tannins are always pleasant, silky and elegant.
