The winemaker

The History of Chateau Penin

Château Penin entered the Carteyron family in 1855, with its acquisition by Louis, with his son Jacques. The property is then divided between viticulture and orchards of nectarines and peaches. The Château Penin then came back to Hubert Carteyron who works with his son, Patrick. It was Hubert who started bottling and marketing Château Penin wine in 1964.

Since 1982, when he took over the estate, Patrick brilliantly represents the fifth generation of Carteryon winemakers. At that time, he made the decision to cease the exploitation of the orchards and to devote the totality of the 15 hectares of the property to the wine growing.

Since then, he has continued to expand his estate, which now covers nearly 50 hectares. Acquisitions are always strategic, choosing only the best parcels and favoring adjoining terroirs to be able to group them together, which facilitates their reasoned exploitation.

The Château Penin vineyard

The 46 hectares of the vineyard of Chateau Penin are conducted within the framework of a reasoned agroecology. Château Penin has the HVE label, High Environmental Value. The climate is oceanic and temperate. The vines benefit from the influence of the Gulf Stream on the one hand and the Landes forest on the other. In addition, a wide band of pine trees constitutes a protective screen, effective against the Atlantic winds.

Since 2020, Château Penin is involved in the reforestation committed by the association ReforestACTION. Each time the number of pallets sold reaches the number of 5, the estate is committed to buying a tree that is planted in an eco-managed forest. This represents approximately 100 trees planted annually.

The wines of Château Penin

The 46-hectare vineyard is divided into five main areas.

-The terroir of the pebbles on 3 hectares for the wine Les Cailloux: vine of more than 30 years with Merlot grape variety
The sandy-clay terroir of 4 hectares for the Natur Rouge wine, with vines over 10 years old with Merlot grapes.
-The terroir of clay on gravelly soil of 7 hectares for the Clairet wine, with vines of more than 8 years old and the Merlot and Cabernet grape varieties.
-The clay-limestone soil extends over 7 hectares. It produces Penin Blanc with vines over 10 years old, the result of a blend of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris; Penin Rosé, a blend of Cabernet and Merlot from vines over 6 years old; and Excess / Deconfiné Rosé, with young vines of Merlot and Cabernet.
-The terroir has deep gravel on 25 hectares of vines reaching 60 years. The wines produced are the Grande Sélection, with vines between 30 and 60 years old of Merlot; the Tradition with vines between 7 and 30 years old of Cabernet and Merlot; the Excess Red / Deconfined with young vines of Merlot and Cabernet; the Cuvée Cabernet Franc, with vines over 10 years old of Cabernet Franc grapes.

Since 2011 Patrick Carteyron has acquired a 2.5 hectare property in the Saint Emilion Grand Cru appellation, Château La Fleur Penin.
