The winemaker
The history of an exceptional estate
The Pétrus estate owes its name to the locality on which its land is located, the place being named after Saint Peter (Petrus in Latin), represented with the keys to Paradise on the wine label. The vineyard does not have a castle but only a winery, so the name "Chateau Petrus" is inaccurate and is an abuse of language.
Owned by the Arnaud family, the estate was bought between 1925 and 1945 by Edmonde Loubat, a hotelier from Libourne. In 1947, she joined forces with Jean-Pierre Moueix, a local wine merchant, in order to make the most of the terroir's potential and compete with the great Médoc wines.
Very quickly, the wine was presented at the wedding banquet of Elizabeth II in the United Kingdom or to the Kennedy family in the United States. In 1970, the vineyard expanded from 7 to 11.5 hectares by buying 4.5 hectares from neighboring Gazin.
Since 2001, Jean-François Moueix, son of Jean-Pierre, has taken over the estate. His other son, Christian, manages it until 2008. The oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet is in charge of the elaboration of the wines, then his son Olivier Berrouet succeeds him from 2008. In 2018, 20% of the estate was sold to American billionaire Alejandro Santo Domingo.
A unique terroir
The Pétrus estate is located in the commune of Pomerol, on the highest point of a plateau between the northeast of Libourne and the western edge of Saint-Emilion. The vineyard covers 11.4 hectares, with a density of 6000 vines/hectare.
The soils are composed of a mixture of gravel and blue clay. This gives a high percentage of iron, which is unique in the region. The clay allows the vines to be constantly supplied with water, even in times of prolonged drought.
Since 2010, the vineyard has been 100% Merlot single-vineyard, on vines over 40 years old.
Prestigious wines
The wines produced by the Pétrus estate are of rare quality. Numerous vintages of Pétrus have moreover received the perfect score of 100/100 by Robert Parker: 2010, 2009, 2000, 1990, 1989, 1961, 1947, 1929, 1921.
Pétrus are described as wines of great elegance, with a complex and powerful nose, and particularly opulent fruit aromas. It combines tension and refinement, with a touch of density. Its taffeta texture and floral returns make it shine and stand out among the greatest wines of this world.
