The winemaker

The history of Château Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron was born of the partition of the original estate into two parts in 1850. One went to Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville, who gave his name to the estate, while the other went to his three sisters and gave birth to the Pichon Comtesse estate. As early as 1851, Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville had the château built as we know it today, inspired by the Renaissance style and with its two emblematic turrets. The vineyards surrounding the romantic building were already being actively exploited, producing wines of the highest quality. In 1855, the wine of Château Pichon Baron was crowned Deuxième Grand Cru Classé at the Universal Exhibition, according to the classification requested by Napoleon III. The Emperor wished to honor the great wines of Bordeaux. In 1933, the Pichon de Longueville family sold the estate to the Bouteiller family. In 1987, it was sold to AXA Millésimes. Château Pichon Baron's production facilities were extensively renovated, starting with the construction of new buildings. In 1988, the cellar and vat room were completely renovated, followed by the château itself. A water mirror now stretches out at the foot of Château Pichon Baron.

The Château Pichon Baron vineyard

The Château Pichon Baron vineyard extends over 73 hectares, on the terroirs of the prestigious Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of the Gironde, some forty kilometers north of Bordeaux. The soil is composed of quaternary gravel with large pebbles. The subsoil is ideal for storing rainwater for root growth, while the hillsides are ideal for drainage. The vines benefit from an oceanic climate, tempered by the proximity of the Gironde estuary. The Château Pichon Baron vineyard is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 35 years.

The wines of Château Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron offers three cuvées.

Château Pichon Baron - Deuxième Grand Cru Classé en 1855

The first wine of Château Pichon Baron, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé en 1855, comes from the estate's oldest vines. Its aromatic palette, worthy of the greatest Pauillacs, offers intense flavors of black fruits and spicy notes. This is an elegant wine with exceptional length on the palate. Designed for long ageing, Château Pichon Baron can be cellared for over 40 years, continuing to improve with age.

Les Griffons de Château Pichon Baron

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is one of the estate's two second wines. Created from the 2012 vintage, it shines with pure character and energetic freshness. This wine can be enjoyed young, but also lends itself to 20+ years of cellaring.

Les Tourelles de Longueville - Pauillac

Les Tourelles de Longueville is the other second wine of Château Pichon Baron. This luscious, full-bodied wine is made from grapes from the Sainte Anne parcel, planted predominantly with Merlot. This wine is best enjoyed young, but can also be kept for over 15 years.
