Château Pipeau, one of the historic estates of Saint Émilion

Château Pipeau is one of the historic estates of Saint Emilion. The property was acquired by Georges Mestreguilhem in 1929. For four generations, it has remained in the family, growing continuously from 7 to 25 hectares of vines. At the same time, the family also became owners of Château de Joinin, another Bordeaux estate.

The terroir of Château Pipeau

The vines of Château Pipeau benefit from the clay-limestone and deep sandy soil of Saint Emilion, as its terroir lies at the foot of the famous village's slope. Merlot represents 90% of the grape variety. It is completed by 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The average age of the vines is 40 years.

The estate is run in an environmentally friendly manner, with manual harvesting. Château Pipeau is committed to a sustainable approach, vinifying in the traditional way, which is to the credit of the fruit, which can express its aromas more fully.

The vats are made of concrete and stainless steel. The average annual production of Château Pipeau is 140,000 bottles, 25% of which are reserved for export. The wine is aged for 12 months in new barrels.

The wine of Château Pipeau

The wines of Château Pipeau benefit from the strong majority contribution of Merlot to develop a powerful nose, always of great finesse. Their aromas of ripe red and black fruits express an exquisite greediness. The ageing process allows the nectar to develop subtle spicy notes that remain on the palate for a long time.
The wines are balanced and round, with firm, silky tannins. Remarkably integrated woody aromas enrich the palette of flavours in the Château Pipeau wines.

The latest vintages of Château Pipeau Saint Émilion Grand Cru

Chateau Pipeau 2017

Ripe blackberries and plums dominate the nose, with fresher notes of herbs and foliage. Some vanilla notes from the barrel remain. The palate is balanced, with mellow tannins.

Château Pipeau 2016

The nose expresses dark berry scents, with a saline nuance. The wine is fleshy and ample, with a fruity finish, not forgetting the silky tannins that enrich it.

Château Pipeau 2015

The 2015 vintage is one of the most important vintages of Château Pipeau. Its deep colour promises a rich bouquet of ripe fruit, such as blackcurrant and cherry, supported by aromas of liquorice and mocha. The palate is warm on the attack and very powerful. The 2015 Château Pipeau also expresses mineral notes on the finish, as well as woody tannins, with coffee and cocoa flavours. The 2015 Château Pipeau is an excellent wine for ageing.
