The winemaker

From Versailles to Pauillac, the history of Château Pontet-Canet

After serving as Grand Écuyer to Louis XV in Versailles, Jean-François de Pontet became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705, he bought a piece of land north of the village of Pauillac which he intended to turn into a vineyard of the highest quality. Some of the plots he bought a few years later were located on the land known as Canet. It was then that he associated this name with his own and that Château Pontet-Canet was born.

A century later, Château Pontet-Canet became a Grand Cru Classé in the famous classification of 1855, ordered by Emperor Napoleon III. Until 1989 and the takeover of the estate by Alfred Tesseron, Château Pontet-Canet knew only three families of owners.

After an episode in organic farming, the estate switched to biodynamic farming and today produces wines that are highly reputed in the Bordeaux region.

The terroir of Château Pontet-Canet

The vineyard of Château Pontet-Canet covers 81 hectares in the commune of Pauillac. Like all great Pauillacs, the vineyard benefits from a lean, well-drained limestone soil that is so well suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Cabernet Franc which comes in complement is located in the center of the Garonnaises gravelly hilltop of the Günz. The Merlot which enters the blend occupies the clay-gravel soils. Finally, the Petit Verdot which brings its spicy aromas occupies three parcels, located on the edge of the croup.

From organic to biodynamic, and from tractors to horses

The switch to biodynamic farming brings more sparkle to the wines of Château Pontet-Canet. The wines are now certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Biodyvin for the entire vineyard since 2010, and by Demeter since 2014.

Since 2008, three Breton horses participate in the exploitation of the domain. Since then, others have been added. They allow the cultivation of the vines, without however compacting the soil too much, which favors the work of the roots. In addition to improving the quality of the vines, the noise of the hooves in the yard replaces advantageously the noisy and smelly engines of the tractors.

Harvesting is of course done by hand, with exacting sorting to keep only the best grapes.

The wines of Château Pontet-Canet

What strikes you right away is the energy that emanates from the wines of Château Pontet-Canet. Their brilliance, but also their exceptional balance, is attributed to the return to the roots, with the most natural cultivation in biodynamics and with the help of draft horses. The wines present a fleshy fruity taste, with always a beautiful elegance.

Château Pontet-Canet

Chateau Pontet-Canet displays a deep purple and brilliant color. Its nose is fresh, mixing fruity, floral and mineral notes. The mouth is harmonious, with a fine tannic structure and a very appreciable length.

Pontet-Canet Heights

Hauts de Pontet-Canet also offers an intense purple color. Beyond the aromas of red and black fruits, a taste of cedar gives it its originality. The mouth is supple, magnified by fine tannins.
