The winemaker

The history of Château Quintus

The vineyards of Saint Emilion were created by the Gallo-Romans. The name Château Quintus was chosen as a tribute to these genius founders. It was their custom to name their fifth child Quintus. The 5 evoked for Château Quintus corresponds to the fifth child in Clarence Dillon's family, after Château Haut Brion, Château La Mission Haut Brion rouge, Château La Mission Haut Brion blanc and Clarendelle. The number 5 also refers to the plots of land whose slopes face the 4 cardinal points, to which is added the sky in front of which the winegrowers turn every morning to plan their work in the vineyard, depending on the weather.

Thanks to the region's successive winegrowers - and for the first time in the world - a winegrowing landscape, Saint Émilion, was propelled to the rank of World Heritage Site, as a cultural landscape, in 1999.

The Château Quintus vineyard

Château Quintus is perched on a 62-metre-high knoll. Its vineyards extend over 28 hectares, located on the extreme south-western part of the Saint Émilion plateau. This sumptuous site offers exceptional panoramic views over the village of Saint Émilion and the Dordogne valley.

The soil of the Château Quintus terroir is made up of a succession of limestone strata on the south-facing slopes of the plateau. The northernmost plots are planted on clay-limestone and gravel soils.

Château Quintus vines grow amid groves of willow, hornbeam, acacia and oak. The grape varieties are 66% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Château Quintus estate is run using traditional agriculture, with natural vineyard management. Grapes are harvested by hand.

The wines of Château Quintus

Château Quintus offers three Saint Émilion red wines.

Château Quintus

The first Château Quintus wine boasts a magnificent deep purple color. The nose impresses with its density and complexity. There are aromas of very ripe red and black fruits, enhanced by spicy touches.

The palate is fleshy and very long. Château Quintus owes its impeccable structure to the 30% Cabernet Franc present in the blend.

Le Dragon de Quintus

Château Quintus' second wine, Le Dragon de Quintus, owes its name to the mythical creature that watched over the estate from the Celtic-period Watchtower, which protected the village.

Saint Émilion de Quintus

Saint Émilion de Quintus is the latest addition to Château Quintus. Its first vintage was offered in 2014.
