The winemaker

Five centuries of Château Soutard history

The origins of Château Soutard date back to 1513. Set at the end of a majestic avenue of lime trees, it has preserved its 16th-century rubble stone wings, as well as its 18th-century facade, which reflect the typical construction of traditional Bordeaux farmhouses.

The château has been embellished from generation to generation, notably by one of the owners, Jean Lavau, who was one of the masters of Saint Emilion and brought the estate to fruition in the 19th century. In 2006, Château Soutard became the property of La Mondiale, France's leading social protection group.

The château and its cellars were completely renovated, respecting the soul of Soutard. A new vat room was created, while a colossal amount of work went into restoring the splendor of the green spaces and the château itself. You can come to Château Soutard to taste its wines, but you can also take advantage of the opportunity to stop off in the Bordeaux region and stay in one of its magnificent chambres d'hôte, in the heart of the wine estate.

The exceptional vineyards of Château Soutard

The 30 hectares of Château Soutard vineyards are all in one piece. They benefit from the limestone plateau of Saint Émilion, with soil depths generally less than 30 centimeters. The soil is also composed of Castillon clay, calcareous molasse and colluvium.

This terroir gives Château Soutard's production the Saint Émilion characteristics that so delight its enthusiasts, with exceptional ageing wines. The cultivation tradition still operates on the "chaussage et déchaussage" model, which avoids the use of herbicides by smothering the grass under the soil, while at the same time "décavaillonner" is used to bring the soil back to the center of the rows.

The grape varieties grown at Château Soutard are dominated by Merlot, which covers 63% of the estate. Cabernet Franc follows with 28%, complemented by a touch of 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. 2% Malbec completes the estate. The grapes are harvested by hand. Aging lasts eighteen months in French oak barrels.
