The winemaker

A prestigious winery

A neighbor of Château d'Yquem, the viticultural history of Château Suduiraut dates back to the 16th century. The region was already known for producing excellent sweet white wines. From the 17th century onwards, the practice of successive selective picking developed, enabling over-ripe harvests. This gave rise to the exceptional sweet wines for which the appellation is renowned.

These sweet wines are obtained by rigorously selecting the grapes affected by the botrytis fungus, generating the famous noble rot sought after for the inimitable aromas it imparts to the wines. At Château Suduiraut, the teams seek out bunches affected by botrytis that are still fresh to obtain very fruity wines, both sweet and intense.

The cuvées are made from a very strict plot selection, and each stage of wine production is carried out with respect for traditional viticultural know-how. In addition, the estate has obtained HVE certification for its environmentally-friendly practices.

An exceptional terroir

The estate's soils are made up of sandy-clay gravel. They are full of stones, which capture the sun's heat during the day, then release it to the vines at night, allowing the grapes to ripen more quickly. As a result, the soils are both filtering and poor, and yields are low. The result is concentrated grapes expressing all the typicity of this unique terroir.

The 92-hectare vineyard is planted mainly with Sémillon, but also includes 10% Sauvignon Blanc, with vines averaging 35 years of age. Sémillon is the grape variety typical of this region, offering highly aromatic wines with pronounced notes of roasted dried fruit, honey, candied citrus and acacia. Sauvignon Blanc completes the aromatic palette with flavors of white peach, citrus and exotic fruit. Blended with Sémillon, it adds complexity and freshness to sweet wines.

The vineyard's geographical location and climate favor the development of botrytis, with cool nights and plenty of sunshine during the day. However, precise conditions must be met to ensure that botrytis develops into noble rot and not grey rot, which destroys the harvest. As a result, production volumes are always limited, making these cuvées even more precious.

When conditions permit, the fungus modifies the grape skin, which becomes porous and accelerates water evaporation. As a result, the berries become more concentrated, giving the wines an extremely rich and complex aromatic bouquet. The grapes develop the candied fruit aromas typical of Sauternes.
