The winemaker

The History of Chateau Taillefer

Records indicate the existence of Château Taillefer in 1761, when Pierre de Belleyme was commissioned by Louis XV to map the province of Guyenne. This territory is equivalent today to the departments of Aveyron and Gironde.

In 1805, the Château Taillefer was precisely described by the Napoleonic cadastre. We find the vineyard, as well as the buildings, already exploited for the production of wine.

In 1923, Antoine Moueix was one of the many Corréziens to leave their region, too poor to feed them, and to settle in the Libournais. At first, he created a wine merchant, then decided to become a winegrower. He bought Château Taillefer, still in the Moueix family today.

Since 2013, Claire Moueix and her husband Cyril Basteau have taken over the work on the estate. They represent the fifth generation to operate Château Taillefer.

The Château Taillefer vineyard

The vineyard of Chateau Taillefer is composed of the typical grape varieties of the Pomerol appellation, with a dominant of Merlot, completed by some vines of Cabernet Franc.

The soil of Taillefer is composed of gravel and silica, on a subsoil of blue clay. This composition produces concentrated grapes and creates racy, velvety tannins. There is also a large amount of iron oxides that bring their particularity to the Château wines, with an exceptional aromatic complexity.

The vineyard of Château Taillefer is led in a reasoned viticulture, respectful of the environment. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The Pomerol appellation

The Pomerol appellation, renowned throughout the world, is reserved for a small territory, located on a plateau sloping gently down to the Isle valley. Its production is indeed confidential, as it represents only 1% of the volume of wine produced in the Bordeaux region. The surface area of the Pomerol terroir is 800 hectares, or a square of 3 kilometers by 3.

The vineyard of Château Taillefer occupies the southern slope of the plateau, 1 kilometer from the center of the appellation.

The wines of Château Taillefer

Château Taillefer produces a Pomerol wine that is very rich in red and black fruit aromas. Fine floral notes of peony and rose accompany this fruity cocktail, along with hints of woody and spicy flavors. Spices include clove, cedar, white and black pepper. The woody notes are dominated by vanilla, fresh tobacco and cocoa. The red wine offers a pleasant minerality.

The wine of Château Taillefer is elegant. Its silky texture is perfectly matched with its velvety tannins, and its finish is particularly long and fragrant. The wine has a beautiful dark color. The nose is harmonious and deliciously fruity. The mouth is full and concentrated. It is generous and refined, with a perfect balance.
