The winemaker
Located north of Saint-Emilion, the estate of Château Yon Figeac has been an emblematic vineyard of the region for many years. Spread over 24 hectares, it is one of the largest estates in the appellation. Its vines give two wines with marked aromas that delight their lovers with their finesse and quality.
The estate's building has existed since 1886, however, it was in 2005 that the real story of Château Yon Figeac began following its acquisition by Alain Château. Initially trained as an engineer in the industry, the path of this man crossed that of the vine and it is from the love of the product that his interest in viticulture was born. He then learned the winegrowing trade in Anjou before taking the reins of his own domain. Rigorous because of his academic training, it is a quality that he applies in the management of his vineyard, both in his approach to innovation and in his pursuit of excellence. In a dynamic of constant improvement of his production tool, he has not hesitated to seek the advice of the greatest, such as Denis Dubourdieu, and to surround himself with the best, such as the consultant oenologist Christophe Ollivier, to accompany him in his winemaking processes. Alain Château also wanted to develop the wine tourism offer within the estate. Visits, tastings, picnics, etc. are offered.
Spread over 24 hectares, the estate of Château Yon-Figeac belongs to the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation area. In order to preserve the environment, each step of the vineyard management is carried out in order to respect the quality of the vine and the grapes as much as possible by adapting the practices to the typicity of the terroir. It is for this reason that the majority of the tasks are carried out manually, such as harvesting. Similarly, Château Yon-Figeac has been working with sustainable agriculture since 2011, is ISO 14001 certified since 2013, and is HVE 3 certified since the 2016 vintage. The goal here is to allow the terroirs to express themselves through qualitative wines. And they can be! From an exceptional terroir with clay-silt soils, the vines benefit from an ideal exposure and a mild climate, relatively warm and tempered by ocean currents. The guarantee of tempting vintages!
The first wine of the house that bears its name is a top-ranking Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Its blend, 80% Merlot with small doses of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, is aged 40% in new wood barrels and 60% in one- or two-wine barrels. The resulting complexity will pair well with red meats, or chocolate desserts. The second wine, entitled Les Roches de Yon, is a fresher wine, also dominated by Merlot. More accessible, it will go better with poultry or fish, or in a more festive context around an aperitif for example.
