The history of Domaine de la Solitude

Domaine de la Solitude takes its name from the rule of the Sainte Famille community, established on the estate from the early 19th century. Founded by Bordeaux priest Pierre Bienvenu Noailles in 1820, its sisters prayed for a life hidden in God, in the silence of Solitude for His glory and the salvation of the world.

In 1831, three women from the community moved into the Hermitage, dividing their time between working in the fields and running an orphanage. Subsequently, the fledgling vineyard experienced many setbacks and destruction, due to the crises and wars that marked the second half of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th.

In the 1970s, the sisters decided to entrust the management of their vineyard to outside contractors, as working the vines was not compatible with their contemplative life, and they felt it was regrettable not to exploit such a grape-friendly terroir.

Since 1993, Olivier Bernard, also a director of Domaine de Chevalier since 1983, has leased the La Solitude wine estate for a period of 40 years.

The Domaine de la Solitude vineyard

The Domaine de la Solitude vineyard covers 32 hectares, 25 of which are dedicated to red wine and the rest to white. For the reds, the grape varieties are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. For the whites, the 7 hectares are split between 60% Sauvignon and 40% Semillon. The average age of the vines is 35 years. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The estate is surrounded by forest, which generates a significant thermal contrast between the cold and warm seasons. The edges of the wooded areas are cool enough to produce great white wines.

The soil at Domaine de la Solitude is light and sandy, composed of small gravels laid on clay, which accentuates the warm character of the terroir in summer and favors the ripening of the Cabernets.
