The winemaker

Established in Bordeaux since 1840, Dourthe was quickly recognized as a reliable and innovative benchmark producer in Bordeaux. This pioneering spirit is evident at every stage of our history. We realized that it was possible in Bordeaux to break new ground and set new standards in 1987, with the Dourthe N°1 project and the creation of a new style of dry white wine in Bordeaux. We selected motivated winemaking partners, guided them in their growing practices, and implemented the new winemaking principles. Dourthe N° 1 was an immediate success, establishing itself as a real innovation and the benchmark for dry white wine in Bordeaux. At the same time, we realized that if we wanted to go further, we had to develop our own vineyards. This was the starting point for our growing involvement in viticulture. After Château Belgrave in 1979, we have taken over eight new properties over the last twenty-five years. Each property has been its own adventure, but over this period we have developed a growing passion for our vines and wines, and implemented the necessary improvement plans at all of them. By 2000, we had acquired a great deal of knowledge about our vineyards, and knew that some of our plots were exceptional, on a par with the very best. We wanted to go one step further and create a new, different and original work that would illustrate our vision of the great wines of Bordeaux: Essence de Dourthe. So we asked the managers of our Vignobles Dourthe to identify their very best terroirs. They were given no other constraint than to achieve the greatest purity in the wines, the most faithful expression of the terroir. The result exceeded all our expectations: Essence de Dourthe belongs in the pantheon of great wines. All these successes have only been possible thanks to passion, hard work and a taste for innovation that drives us to surpass ourselves every day.
