The winemaker

The History of Chateau Dauzac

The first recorded owner of Chateau Dauzac was Pétrus d'Auzac. It was the very famous Richard the Lionheart - King of England, Count of Poitiers, Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Maine and Count of Anjou - who gave him this land.
The first traces of the vineyard of Château Dauzac are evoked by the Benedictine monks of the Sainte-Croix de Bordeaux abbey in 1545. They called the building Bourdieu, which refers to a country house with a vineyard. At that time, Château Dauzac belonged to wine merchants, the Drouillard family.
It was in Château Dauzac that the Bordeaux mixture was conceived. This mixture of copper sulfate and milk of lime allowed to save the vineyard from mildew. It is still a recipe used all over the world.
Over the centuries, Château Dauzac has had many owners, individuals and companies, including the insurance company Maif. In 2020, it was bought by the Roulleau family.

The Château Dauzac vineyard

The vineyard of Chateau Dauzac covers 49 hectares, all in one piece: 45 hectares belong to the Margaux appellation and 4 hectares to the Haut Médoc appellation. It is close to the Gironde estuary and thus benefits from the oceanic influence, while being protected from oceanic winds, thanks to 120 hectares of meadow and forest.
Everything is done to preserve biodiversity. Sheep graze in the park to maintain and enrich it, while a dozen hives produce honey sold at the castle. Part of the plots is grassed to better regulate the water supply.
The terroir of Château Dauzac benefits from a gravelly hilltop, made up of layers of varying thicknesses and resting on a clayey and gravelly subsoil. The parcel work allows to conceive various wines, having for common point the quality.
The estate's grape varieties are 69% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes are cultivated according to a reasoned viticulture, with only organic fertilizers. Insecticides are forbidden. The grapes are harvested by hand.

The red wine Château Dauzac

Château Dauzac is the first wine of the estate. It is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon is largely in the majority and represents about two-thirds of the blend, which can fluctuate depending on the vintage.
Château Dauzac is a complex wine with a great aromatic diversity. It finds its balance between the minerality of the Cabernet Sauvignon, and the silkiness and roundness of the Merlot. Its color is very colorful, a deep red with hints of brick.
The nose exhales flavors of mocha and baked prunes, toasted notes of bread crust, as well as aromas of undergrowth and mushrooms. The palate is very ripe and concentrated, backed by round tannins.
Château Dauzac is at its best between 10 and 15 years. It can be aged up to 20 years.
