The History of Belena Estate

Domaine Belena belongs to the Schenk group, which was born in Rolle, Switzerland, in 1893. When Arnold Schenk, son of the company's founder Charles, inherited the company, his primary goal was to create a wine business that would reach across Europe.

Arnold and his successors conquered new territories during the following century: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Benelux and Great Britain. The Schenk group became a unique pan-European structure in the wine world in terms of production.

In order to invest continuously in new vineyards, the Schenk group decided to explore the Burgundy lands with the acquisition of Domaine Belena.

The Domaine Belena vineyard

The vineyard of Domaine Belena extends mainly on the terroir of the Hautes Côtes de Beaune which goes from Ladoix Serrigny to Santenay. The recognition of the AOC of Hautes Côtes de Beaune took place in 1961.

The grape varieties are typical of Burgundy wines:
- Aligoté ;
- Chardonnay ;
- Pinot Noir.

The wine history of Burgundy began as early as the 1st century A.D., with the arrival of the Romans, and was then continued by the lesser Cistercians whose abbeys were surrounded by vines. Domaine Belena produces white and red Burgundy wines. The red wine of Domaine Belena is made from the Pinot Noir grape.

Chardonnay is the main white grape variety, it is accompanied by Aligoté. Both are considered as grape varieties belonging to the Noiriens family, as they are descendants of Pinot Noir. The Aligoté and the Chardonnay are indeed the result of the crossing between the Pinot Noir and the Gouais. If Chardonnay is originally from Burgundy, it is now cultivated all over the world, while Aligoté remains a Burgundian specialty.
