The winemaker

The history of Domaine de Montille


Domaine de Montille was founded in the 1750s on 12 hectares. Due to financial problems, the owner at the time, Étienne de Montille, had to part with several parcels and refocus his estate on Volnay, with only 2.5 hectares of Volnay 1er Cru vines.

Étienne's grandson, Hubert de Montille, took over the estate after the Second World War. He had a dual career, being both a winemaker and a lawyer. He decided to stop trading grapes and produce his own wines entirely. In this way, he helped the estate return to prosperity by gradually buying up new plots.

Today, Domaine de Montille is run by Hubert's children, Alix and Étienne de Montille. At the same time, they have founded a structure dedicated to wine trading.

The Domaine de Montille vineyard


The Domaine de Montille vineyard covers 37 hectares. 20 hectares are dedicated to red wine and the rest to white wine. The red grape variety is Pinot Noir, the white grape variety is Chardonnay. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and average production is 180,000 bottles a year.

Domaine de Montille has been farmed organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2005.
