The winemaker

Domaine William Fèvre, a little over sixty years to become a very big

In 1959 William Fèvre founded the estate, which was then called Domaine de la Maladière. William Fèvre was no stranger to viticulture: his family had been working the vines for over two centuries. In the early days, the estate consisted of the family's seven hectares. Gradually, he acquired new plots, all located on the historic Chablis terroir. With a vineyard of 78 hectares, William Frère became one of the largest owners of Chablis vines. The reputation of the wines produced continues to grow, reaching the heights it enjoys today. In 1998, Maison Bouchard Père et Fils, an old Champagne family, bought the estate, sharing the founder's unwavering commitment to absolute respect for terroirs.

The eco-friendly spirit of Domaine William Fèvre

The estate's teams take into consideration each of the seven climates of this terroir in an environmentally-friendly and traditional way. The recognized excellence of the domaine's wines can only be achieved with passion, precision and rigor. Didier Seguier, who has run the estate since 1998, ensures that the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum time, and that yields are regulated. Organic certification is underway. Over time, the estate has modernized.

The 155-million-year-old terroir of Dpmaine William Fèvre

Kimmeridgian terroir is an area formerly occupied by the sea. This subsoil is a geological layer in which gray marl and limestone beds (rich in fossils) coexist. This subsoil is very rich in marine sediments and various shells. It is this terroir that constitutes the historic Chablis: the Chablis vineyard that existed before the expansion of the vineyard in the 1970s. The minerality and freshness of these wines come from the alternation of marl and marly limestone. Harvesting is manual for all appellations, enabling the grapes to be meticulously sorted. As far as ageing is concerned, new oak barrels are not used, so as not to alter the minerality and freshness of the Chardonnay.
