The winemaker

The history of the Jean-Marc Brocard estate

Jean-Marc Brocard got all his knowledge of the vine and its cultivation, as well as the making of wine, from the winegrower Louis Petit. During the years of apprenticeship at his side, he applied his main teaching: "Watch, shut up, learn."
Jean-Marc Brocard was born in 1946 in Chaudenay le Château, in the Côte d'Or. At the end of the 60's, his father, a farmer, warned him that agriculture was no longer a sufficiently promising sector to live serenely and above all to support a family. This is why Jean-Marc Brocard decided to study for a BTS in engineering and became an engineer in Auxerre.
The meeting with his future wife changed his orientation. His future in-laws work in the wine industry in Saint Bris le Vineux, in the Yonne, and will introduce him to this passion. When his first child, Julien, was born in 1973, Jean-Marc Brocard settled in Préhy, still in the Yonne, in the heart of the Chablis vineyard and planted his first vines. The Jean-Marc Brocard estate was born.
Julien, who also studied engineering, joined his parents in the domain in 1995. Being very interested in biodynamic farming, he started to use the ancestral methods respectful of the preservation of nature in 1997 on a part of the estate. Today, the Jean-Marc Brocard estate is one of the most important to cultivate its vines in organic agriculture in the Chablis region.

The Jean-Marc Brocard estate vineyard

The Jean-Marc Brocard estate covers 144 hectares. The white grape variety is almost total, as it represents 139 hectares, leaving only 5 hectares for the red wine. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The estate produces an average of 900,000 bottles per year.
60 hectares of the Jean-Marc Brocard estate are certified in Organic Agriculture and 40 hectares in Biodynamics.
Everything is done to respect the terroir, as well as the natural calendar of the seasons. The inputs are made from natural substances, in order to proscribe all chemical components that are harmful to the environment.
