This Côte Chalonnaise village takes its name from the god Mercury (god of commerce). Mercurey is crossed by the Via Agrippa, which in Roman times linked Chalon-sur-Saône to Autun. Mercurey is one of Burgundy's largest wine-growing communes, with over 600 ha of vines. In Burgundy, the Clos du Roy or Clos du Roi are the former Clos of the Dukes of Burgundy. So in Mercurey, when the last Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, died in 1477, the ducal crown vines were handed over to the royal crown. The vines took the name Clos du Roy.
