The winemaker

The history of Maison Nicolas Potel

Viticulture in Burgundy dates back to the first century AD, under the Roman Empire. The tradition was then perpetuated, notably by the Cistercian monks who participated in the fame of Burgundy wine by producing the wines of the local aristocracy.

Nicolas Potel comes from a family of winegrowers in Burgundy. The family property, Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, was located in Volnay. In 1997, when Nicolas Potel's father passed away, the estate was sold and Nicolas went into the wine business.

In 2006, he founded his own domain with the purchase of vineyards extending on the Côte de Beaune, as well as on the Côte de Nuits. From a surface area of 13 hectares at the beginning, the progressive acquisition of new vines allowed the Maison Nicolas Potel to expand and reach 22 hectares which are shared between Vosne Romanée and Santenay.

Since then, Nicolas Potel has acquired modern and efficient production tools, with the purchase of former warehouses at the Nuits-Saint-Georges train station. It also founds partnerships with the best winegrowers of the region to enrich its trading catalog.

In 2004, the House of Nicolas Potel came under the control of the House of Labouré-Roi. It is renowned throughout the world, which allows it to export part of its production.

The vineyard of Maison Nicolas Potel

In respect with the Burgundian tradition, the main grape varieties are Pinot Noir, at the origin of the great red wines, and Chardonnay from which the great white Burgundies are made.

The vineyard of the House Nicolas Potel is conducted with the greatest respect for the environment, with the least possible intervention and, as far as possible, without recourse to chemicals.

The work on the vinification is also reduced to its minimum, in order to let each grape variety express itself. It is the vinification that adapts to the vintage and not the other way around. Sulphite is used sparingly, in order to preserve the identity of each terroir.
