The winemaker

A family-owned champagne house

The company was created in the mid-20th century by Francis Egly's grandfather. It originally consisted of only three hectares, but these were high quality parcels, located in the Ambonnay Grand Cru.

His son Michel, and then his grandson Francis were to expand the estate by acquiring new and very promising land, such as the Crayères parcel, planted with vines over 60 years old.

The winery

The vineyard is predominantly Pinot Noir, with only one-third divided between Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier with vines averaging 40 years old. The clay-limestone soils benefit from a south-south-east exposure, ideal for the vine and the whole estate is run according to sustainable agriculture principles.

For more than 20 years, Egly-Ouriet champagnes have been vinified in wood and are made without malolactic fermentation.

While the trend is to sell champagnes young, Francis Egly makes a different choice, convinced that they will gain in quality. He therefore lets his champagnes age for a few years before marketing them. The brut wines are kept for four years before being sold and the vintage wines for more than six years. The production is deliberately limited with an annual volume around 100,000 bottles.
